Your microwave is a convenient way to cook but can also serve as a home for food waste and bacteria. Learning how to properly clean your microwave is important to keep you and your family safe.
You should clean the device monthly to keep it clean and ready for use. There are multiple ways to clean your microwave so you can heat your food worry-free.
The Importance of Maintaining Your Microwave
There are several reasons you need to clean your microwave using these methods.
The heat left in a microwave after use can be a haven for growing bacteria, which can then get on other meals and leave you sick.
Your reusable kitchen sponge could pose an even greater hazard, since e-coli and other bacteria can use the surface to multiply, contributing to the risk of illness.
Here are three easy ways to clean your microwave.
1. Using a Bowl
You can add multiple items to clean your microwave with a bowl and water.
One of the best ways to use this method is with white vinegar. The vinegar can kill bacteria in your microwave and make it easy to remove stains.
Add two tablespoons of white vinegar to a microwave-safe bowl with water. The mist from the bowl will coat the inner surface of the device. Microwave the bowl for five minutes.
Leave the bowl in the microwave for at least ten minutes, so you don’t burn yourself when removing it. After removing the bowl, wipe down your microwave with a soft, clean cloth.
If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, you replace the vinegar with fresh lemon juice or a few drops of dish soap. Squeeze the lemon juice into the bowl before adding the skin of the lemon. If you use dish soap, ensure that you do so sparingly, as too much dish soap can lead to a bubbly mess.
2. Using Baking Soda
Baking soda serves many purposes, including cleaning your microwave.
For this method, you’ll need two tablespoons of baking soda per cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl.
As with the previous methods, microwave the mixture for five minutes, allowing the moisture from it to disperse, and let it sit in the device for at least ten minutes afterward.
Wipe your microwave down afterward to leave it clean and fresh.
3. Using Melamine Foam
Melamine foam sponges, popularly known as Magic Erasers are an effective way to get dirt and grime out of your microwave.
Remove the turntable and glass top before wetting the sponge and scrubbing the inner surfaces. If you don’t have luck wiping your microwave down, add the turntable and top again. Soak the sponge in water and microwave it for five minutes.
After microwaving, let the sponge cool before wiping down the inside with the sponge and dry cloth.
