People use the shower room daily, so this little space in your home needs regular cleaning. Dirt, soap scum, mold and bacteria can cling to the surfaces leading to unpleasant smells that can potentially cause health problems for your family. Tackle the problem with homemade shower cleaner.
If you want to skip the harmful chemicals of store-bought shower cleaning products, try these miracle shower cleaner recipes at home to make every area of the shower shine and sparkle.
Tiled Floors
Soap scum and mold can build up on the shower floors. Mold exposure can lead to sneezing and allergic reactions. If you notice visible signs of mold and accumulated dirt on the tiled floor, it’s time to clean the shower.
Clean Shower Floor Using Vinegar
Vinegar has disinfecting properties, so it’s a good alternative for commercial cleaners. Combine vinegar, baking soda, Dawn dish soap and water to create a homemade shower cleaner for the tiled floor. Mix the following in a bowl and transfer the solution into a spray bottle.
- 3 cups of water
- 2 tablespoons of Dawn
- 1 cup vinegar
- 1/3 cup baking soda
To use it for cleaning, spray some liquid on the floor. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the solution to soften the dirt. Then scrub the floor using a sponge or an old toothbrush. Rinse the floor to wash away the dirt.
Clean Shower Floor Using Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is also an effective disinfectant and an affordable replacement for vinegar as a DIY home cleaner ingredient. If you have one stashed in the bathroom cabinet, follow the instructions to create a cleaning solution.
- 4 ounces of hydrogen peroxide
- 3 cups warm water
- 4 ounces of rubbing alcohol
- 2 teaspoons of Dawn dish soap
Mix everything in a container and stir. Transfer into a spray bottle. To use, shake and spray on the shower walls and floors after each use. This all-purpose daily cleaning solution doesn’t contain harsh chemicals and efficiently tackles dirt.
Glass Shower Doors and Walls
Glass shower doors are an excellent upgrade for a small space. They’re also a statement of elegance in any home, but they get easily dirty. If the doors start to look grimy, stained and foggy, everything around the shower looks dirty, too. Glass doors catch people’s attention right after they enter the shower, so they must be clear and maintained after each use. Here are two DIY natural shower cleaner recipes to make your glass shower doors gleam all the time.
Glass Shower Door Cleaner Using Vinegar
You only need three things to clean the glass shower walls.
- Distilled vinegar
- Distilled water
- 1/4 dishwashing soap
Mix equal parts of both distilled water and distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Pour in ¼ teaspoon of dish soap.
Glass Shower Door Spray Using Lemon
If you run out of vinegar, lemon contains acid that helps loosen grime and break down dirt and soap scum.
- Lemon juice
- Distilled water
- 1/4 dishwashing soap
Combine equal parts of distilled water and lemon juice in a spray bottle. Add ¼ teaspoon of dish soap.
To clean, spray any of the homemade solutions onto the glass doors, starting from the top to the bottom. Let it sit for five minutes. Then, use a non-abrasive sponge to wipe the glass doors and a squeegee to pull down the remaining residue from top to bottom with a single stroke. Rinse with water and dry the doors or walls with a lint-free microfiber towel.
Bathtub
Bacteria, soap scum and other types of dirt can accumulate in the tub. Once every two weeks, disinfect the tub to keep issues at bay. You only need two things to concoct a natural shower cleaner for a sparkling clean tub — vinegar and dish soap.
Clean the Tub Using Dish Soap
Adjust the water temperature in the shower to warm. Splash warm water around the tub using the handheld showerhead or a cup. Pour ¼ cup of dish soap on grimy and dirty surfaces. Using a brush or a broom made of synthetic bristles, scrub the tub until you remove the accumulated dirt.
Clean the Tub Using Vinegar
Mix equal parts of dish soap and white vinegar in a microwave-safe cup. Put in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Stir, then pour the solution into the tub. Wait for 30 minutes before brushing or sweeping away the dirt and grime. To finish, rinse with cold water.
Showerheads
When a showerhead is new, water comes out abundantly. But minerals in water can block the openings in the showerhead, leading to clogged jet holes and water coming out less. The first indication the showerhead needs cleaning is the reduced water flow. Learn two ways to clean the showerhead.
Clean a Removable Showerhead Using Vinegar
- Remove the showerhead from the shower arm carefully and put it in a bowl.
- Pour vinegar into a different microwaveable bowl and warm it up for a few seconds in the microwave.
- Pour the warm vinegar into the showerhead. Ensure the showerhead is entirely submerged in the vinegar.
- Let it soak for 30 minutes.
- Remove the showerhead and scrub it lightly using an old toothbrush.
- Use a toothpick or a paper clip to clear any mineral or dirt deposits from the jet holes.
- Rinse and reattach it back to the shower arm.
Clean a Non-removable Showerhead Using Vinegar
- Use a thick plastic bag, such as a food storage bag, and pour in one cup of distilled white vinegar. Add if you need more than a cup to cover the entire showerhead.
- Tie the bag with the vinegar to the shower arm using a rubber band or tape.
- Let the showerhead soak in the vinegar for at least four hours or overnight.
- Once done, remove the showerhead from the bag and scrub lightly.
- Use a paper clip or a safety pin to remove the clog on the jet holes.
- Turn the shower on for a few minutes to rinse away the vinegar and dirt.
