Having a baby can be incredibly exciting and terrifying at the same time. There are so many unknowns and so much to plan for. Between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy, parents often discover whether they are having a boy or a girl with an ultrasound. A popular way to celebrate this news with family and friends is to host a gender reveal party.
Gender reveals have been around since the late 2000s and have been celebrated with everything from food to fireworks. Here are eight unique gender reveal party ideas for 2022:
1. Eat Cake
Cake brings some added sweetness to sharing your news. There are so many fun ways to do this – you can use food coloring to change the color of the batter, or you can fill the middle of a cake with colored candy or fruit.
Another option is to bake cupcakes and fill them with colored jam or icing. To tease your guests, you can ice and sprinkle everything with both pink and blue.
If you don’t want to find out the gender yourself until the party, ask a trusted friend or family member to make the cake for you. You can also share your gender results with your baker and ask them to use the appropriate color.
2. Serve Butterfly Tea
Butterfly pea flower tea is a colorful drink made from an Asian flower, not from actual butterflies! When steeped, it turns a bold blue color. However, mixing the steeped tea with an acidic liquid like lemon juice instantly turns it a vibrant purple.
To set up a gender reveal with butterfly tea, fill a large, clear glass halfway with the steeped tea. The initial color will be blue. If the baby is a boy, fill a second opaque glass with water. If the baby’s going to be a girl, fill the opaque cup with lemon juice.
Explain how the color change works, and then pour the second glass into the butterfly tea. A magical color change — or not — will instantly let your guests know the gender of your new baby.
This reveal method is the most fun when announcing a baby girl because the color change is so exciting to watch. However, there’s no reason not to let your guests experiment by adding lemon to their tea after announcing that the baby’s a boy.
3. Break a Pinata
Party pinatas are another fun way to reveal the gender of your baby. Hit the pinata with a blindfold so you’re the last to know, or stand underneath and pull to release a swirl of confetti overhead.
This method is perfect if you want photos showing you and your family’s initial reaction to the news. You can fill the pinata with confetti, colored candy or balloons to suit your fancy.
4. Light a Christmas Tree
If you’re due during the Christmas season, consider wrapping a tree with colored lights to reveal the new baby’s gender. You can go as big as you like with this – stay inside, or cover bushes and trees all over your yard for a more dramatic reveal.
You could also consider wrapping both blue and pink lights around the tree and then only lighting the strand that matches your child’s gender. Just make sure you get the correct plug!
5. Complete an Escape Room
Do you enjoy cracking codes or following clues? Consider coordinating with a local escape room to have an exciting gender reveal event.
Ask the hostess to hold onto an envelope that contains the information about your new baby’s gender. Once you complete the escape room, they can give you the news as your reward.
If an escape room is too dramatic for you, scale this idea down to playing a board game with friends. The winners get to know the news first.
6. Go Hiking
If you’re an outdoorsy couple, this gender reveal idea might be perfect for you. Have a trusted friend take a flag or sealed envelope to the end of a hike. Then, take the trail to find out the gender of your new baby.
Complete the hike yourself for a more personal moment, or take along a big group to share the surprise. You can spend the time talking and collecting guesses on whether you’re having a boy or a girl.
7. Use Balloons
Another popular party idea is to use balloons to reveal your new child’s gender. You can hide them in a box or have an older child or friend bring them into the room to break the news. Whatever you do, make sure they are secure so they don’t float away and harm the environment.
Balloons are festive and make for great photos. The simplicity of this reveal method doesn’t take anything away from the joy you’ll feel as you learn more about your new child.
8. Just Tell Them
While it can be fun, you don’t need to do anything fancy to share your news with family and friends. Just tell them, or reveal your baby’s gender at a shower or a small family gathering.
If you like, you can even keep the information from yourself until you’re ready to share. That way, you can celebrate the news with friends and family for the first time.
Time to Party
Having a gender reveal party can add some extra fun to an already exciting time. It also allows your friends and family to celebrate with you in a special way.
Use these eight ideas to plan a unique gender reveal party that will add a creative twist to telling your news. However you celebrate, make sure you take time to savor these moments and anticipate holding your little one someday soon.
