Congrats on becoming your girl’s maid of honor (MOH)! With this role comes a ton of duties you are responsible for before, during and after the ceremony. If you’ve never done this before, the checklist can seem extensive and you’ll want to know exactly what you’re supposed to do. While the bride is in charge of your responsibilities, there are some of the maid of honor duties and responsibilities you’ll most likely be doing.

Leading Ladies

As the chief bridesmaid, you are in charge of many things, but the most important is the support you offer the bride. Being a bride-to-be can be overwhelming with decisions and planning. The maid of honor should take over the role of keeping the bridesmaids in the loop and keeping them on schedule the day of the wedding.

Keep them updated on the bride’s needs and wishes and ensure everyone is on the same page–start with the dresses and go from there. Begin a group chat with the bride’s leading ladies and keep them informed of everything. Sometimes a bride-to-be can be scatterbrained and it helps a ton to have a middle man between her and her girls.

The Little Things

From dress shopping to decor, your bride-to-be will likely want you to accompany her for cake tastings, your opinion or a supportive hand to hold. Being a bride involves so many decisions that she will probably need your advice and support.

Help your bride choose a wedding venue and plan her registry. You’re responsible for getting the word out about her registry if it isn’t included in the invitations. Help her choose the wedding colors and the songs for the ceremony. She may need assistance designing and addressing the wedding invitations or even hiring a wedding planner. You are her go-to for everything wedding related, so do your best to keep her sane amid the planning chaos.

Bridal Shower and Bachelorette

One of the primary duties of a maid of honor is throwing the bride-to-be a bridal shower and planning her bachelorette party. Depending on your budget, these parties can be as intimate or extravagant as the bride wants, but you are responsible for putting them together.

Traditionally, the maid of honor plans the bridal shower with bridesmaids helping tremendously from the planning to the invitations and decor. The Bachelorette party is also your responsibility. Enlist some bridesmaids for help in the planning and details. The bridesmaids are typically in charge of paying for the bride’s trip, so include them in every detail and the trip should be fair to their budget. You could plan a staycation that the bride will love if the group wants to stay low-key.

Wedding Day Duties

The wedding day is usually hectic and crazy for the bride-to-be. Not only are her nerves all over the place since it’s the biggest day of her life, but there is still so much to do. Coordinate everything with the bridesmaids and keep them on task. Ensure they are on time for photos and everything else the bride needs.

Assist the bride with her dress when she needs to use the restroom, witness the couple signing the marriage license, hold the bride’s bouquet and ensure she eats and drinks throughout the day. You will also be in charge of giving a toast or speech following the ceremony or at the reception.

Out of all the special people in the bride’s life, she chose you–so feel honored! Enjoy all of the maid of honor duties and responsibilities that come with the job. You are an invaluable part of her ceremony and everything in between. Don’t forget to have some fun!
