A honeymoon is a special time in a newlywed’s story — it’s the chance to celebrate the marriage more intimately and unwind after the whirlwind of wedding planning and festivities. Just like with your wedding, your honeymoon should represent your interests and preferences as a couple.

While the typical beach or resort honeymoon offers peace and quiet, it might not be the right choice for everyone. For many couples, a vibrant, culturally-rich city can be far more romantic and memorable. When my husband and I decided to ditch the traditional beach honeymoon for a 10-day trip to the biggest city in North America — Mexico City — I realized why a city-based trip can be the perfect post-wedding adventure.

Endless Discovery Over Endless Lounging

Cities offer almost endless possibilities. From world-class museums and historical sites to live theater and neighborhood tours, every day can be a new adventure.

When my husband and I first started thinking about our honeymoon, we were in the midst of wedding planning. At the time, a lounging-heavy beach vacation sounded like the perfect antidote to wedding stress. However, once some time passed after the wedding and we were recharged, we realized we’re city people — we live in a big city and, whenever we go on a trip, we love exploring a new city’s neighborhoods, museums and culture.

While a beach honeymoon sounded nice, we worried it would feel monotonous after a day or two. From Coyoacán to Roma Norte, Mexico City’s neighborhoods offered so much to explore. If you and your partner think a museum day sounds better than a beach day or you’d rather dive into the shelves of a charming, local bookstore than scuba dive, a city honeymoon might be right for you.

A Culinary Adventure for Two

One of the biggest limitations of a resort honeymoon can be the food. While convenient, all-inclusive buffets and on-site restaurants can become repetitive. A city, on the other hand, is a feast for the senses, offering a diverse culinary landscape. A city honeymoon is a chance to indulge in everything from street food to Michelin-starred restaurants, turning every meal into a potential discovery.

My husband and I still talk about some of the incredible food we had on our honeymoon in Mexico City. We made it a mission to find the best tacos, and we’d start our days with coffee and pastries from a local panadería, planning our adventures.

Trying new food and restaurants together became a bonding experience. It’s a low-stakes adventure you can have multiple times a day. Every meal is a moment that’s uniquely yours. These are the memories that stick with you — not just the taste of the food, but the feeling of enjoying it together.

Challenges That Connect You

One of the biggest hindrances to choosing a city honeymoon destination can be the fear of logistics — how do I get around? What if I get lost in a crowded area? These kinds of questions can make the all-inclusive care of a resort seem like a lifeboat in an unfamiliar sea.

What surprised me, though, about going on a city honeymoon was that all of those challenges brought my husband and me even closer. Navigating our neighborhood, learning how to order in Spanish and getting a hang of the traffic — as much as we could — made us feel more confident in both ourselves and our ability to tackle new things together.

Starting a marriage by growing your faith in your teamwork can make you fall even more in love with your partner. Of course, the goal of a honeymoon is connection and celebration. The romance is found in overcoming small hurdles together, not in feeling overwhelmed by them. Thoughtful preparation is key to ensuring your trip is filled with fun, memorable challenges.

Tips for Planning a City Honeymoon

Here are a few tips to help you strike the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation on your trip.

Pick the Right Destination

While my husband and I had a great honeymoon in a large city, you might prefer a smaller city, like Bruges, Belgium, or Florence, Italy. As you think about what size city you want, consider how long you’ll be going. A seven-day honeymoon is the average length of time. You might not cover much ground in Mexico City or Tokyo in a few days, but if you have lots of time, a large city can offer endless room for exploration.

You should also consider the local weather when choosing your destination. For instance, some locations have a particular rainy season. In addition, think about whether you want a location filled with historical sites, high-end shopping or vibrant nightlife to help you decide where to go on your adventure.

Balance Adventure With Relaxation

Being in a city doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy relaxing honeymoon activities. One of the benefits of going to a city is that you can find nearly every type of activity. Balance sightseeing with a trip to the spa for couple massages or a low-key winery tour. Your body will thank you after a long day of trekking through museums, exploring neighborhoods and eating your fill at a local food market.

Book Reservations Early

If you’re heading to a popular destination, make sure to book any special dinner or bar reservations early since cities can be more competitive. Nearly 690 million tourists traveled internationally in the first half of 2025, so booking your must-do restaurants, museums and experiences early can help you avoid missing out in popular cities.

Find out which museums require pre-booking as well. For instance, tickets for the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City go fast and need to be purchased in advance, but you can buy a ticket at the door for other museums, like the National Museum of Anthropology.

Build Time Buffers into Your Schedule

A city honeymoon usually means navigating traffic more than you would for a traditional beach honeymoon. This is one of many reasons to add time buffers to your itinerary, especially for important reservations.

Regardless of your destination, avoid packing too many plans into the start of your trip. You might need some time to get over jet lag or flight delays could mean you arrive later than planned. If you’re going somewhere at a higher altitude, like Mexico City, it’s also best to give yourself time to acclimate by avoiding strenuous activity for the first 48 hours. The first day or two are a great time to book a relaxing spa visit or explore a neighborhood without a strict schedule.

Find the Romance That’s Right for You

There is no one-size-fits-all formula for the perfect honeymoon. For some, it might be on a sandy shore, but for others, romance might be found in a bustling city square, a world-class art museum or by sharing a meal at a tiny, family-run restaurant.

Your honeymoon is the first big adventure of your marriage. It should reflect who you are as a couple. If your idea of a perfect day involves discovery, culture and incredible food, consider trading the beach towel for a map. Your perfect, romantic escape might be waiting for you in the heart of a city.
