Winter’s chill brings with it a desire for warmth, connection and a touch of romance — just like in your favorite holiday movies. Whether you’re starting a new romance or deepening an existing connection, these date ideas will help you capture that cozy, heartwarming feeling and create a love story of your own.

1. Take a Hot Cocoa Tour

One of the best parts of winter is savoring a drink, like hot cocoa. Before it was in cookies and cakes, “chocolate” exclusively referred to the drinkable version. Take inspiration from chocolate’s origins by planning a hot cocoa tour of your area. Look up the most well-known spots or find places with innovative takes on the winter classic.

Create cute passports for yourselves and check off places as you go. Make notes along the way so you can rank your favorite spots based on criteria like flavor, richness and festive extras, like marshmallows. It’s fun and an easy way to bring up a second date — you have to return to your favorite places after all.

2. Have a Grown-Up Snow Day

Remember being a kid and waking up to the magic of fresh snow? Release your inner children by clearing your schedules for a classic snow day. Make snow angels, go sledding, have snowball fights and build a snowman. It’s a playful way to be silly together and get the energy going during what’s usually a more low-key season.

After you’re happily exhausted from laughing and ducking for cover, turn your snow day into one of the coziest winter date ideas at home by getting comfortable inside with blankets, snacks, a warm drink and your favorite holiday movies. A true snow day is about unstructured fun, so don’t get too caught up in the details and leave room for some spontaneity.

3. Explore Local Holiday Markets

Holiday markets are a great place to get into the festive spirit with your date. Germany is especially known for its Christmas markets, and some locations in the U.S. hold markets inspired by the tradition. Stroll through the stands as you sip hot chocolate or mulled cider and admire the lights.

Markets are also a great way to shop local during the holiday season, supporting independent makers and artisans. Bringing your lists with you is a great way to knock out some gift shopping and a nice icebreaker for talking about close family and friends you’re buying for.

4. Unleash Your Inner Ice Skater

It’s a classic scene in almost every romantic winter movie — the central pair skates around an ice rink and, between the comedic stumbles and hand-holding, falls in love. Whether you’re trying to ignite a spark or connect with your significant other, ice skating is a perfect winter date idea.

It creates a bond as you participate in the shared activity together. Since falling is a normal part of the experience, ice skating also requires a sense of humor, which is a great trait in a partner.

5. Give Back Together

The holidays are a perfect time to give back to your community. Between November and December, volunteerism often increases by 50%, though one in four adults volunteers year-round. Connect over shared values by volunteering together on your next winter date and giving your time and energy to a cause you both believe in. Look for nearby soup kitchens, find and donate your unused items, or participate in a charity fundraiser.

Feeling fulfilled by helping others is great in itself, but feeling fulfilled together by giving back can create a deep bond. Knowing you both have a passion for the same issues can also strengthen a shared value system.

6. Have an Indoor Picnic

Picnics aren’t just for summer. Get creative by bringing the picnic indoors with a cozy picnic blanket, yummy treats and maybe even a board game. You can even take advantage of the benefits of having a picnic indoors by building a pillow fort.

To make your picnic extra fun, consider turning gathering food into a game. You could each bring one of your favorite foods and one food you’ve never tried before. Or you could both bring food that’s a particular color or starts with a specific letter. If you’re shopping for food together, try playing rock-paper-scissors to see who gets to pick which parts of the meal.

7. Celebrate Your Creative Side

As more people work remotely, many cities and towns are offering ways for people to get out, get creative and make friends. For example, you could make your own candles, take a cooking class or try your hand at pottery. Types of activities, such as cooking classes and pottery making, can offer therapeutic benefits and help couples grow as a team.

They’re also great because they provide room for you to talk while also giving you an activity to focus on, so moments of silence might feel more comfortable, especially on a first date.

8. Bake Your Favorite Holiday Treats

Baking together is one of the best winter first date ideas, and the beauty of it is that it works whether or not you fancy yourself a baker. Here’s why — sometimes baking goes wrong, but finding someone who can laugh when the cupcakes don’t rise or still smile when your holiday cookies become one gargantuan cookie is a gift. Like life, it’s all about having fun, even if things get messy.

To take this date outside, start by going to the grocery store together to gather ingredients and decorative additions, like snowflake-shaped sprinkles and festive frosting.

9. Get Lost in the Stacks

A multi-story bookstore

Take it from any of the bookworms in your life — a bookstore date is the height of romance. Get lost in a local, off-the-beaten-path bookstore together. This date is a perfect way to find out what genres, themes and authors your date likes. This information may even serve as a jumping-off point for a later gift idea.

You can also talk about what books shaped you most as children or discuss what subjects you’ve always wanted to learn about.

10. Get Cultured and Cozy at a Museum

Want to recreate the iconic “When Harry Met Sally” (1989) scene from The Metropolitan Museum of Art — OK, maybe this time with an actual date instead of just missing each other due to bad timing. Find out what subjects your date is into. There are plenty of possibilities from art to archaeology. Picking a place that reflects their interests, though, will make the date all the more romantic.

Museum dates are a great indoor date, and you can easily lose track of time exploring and learning together. Make time for a stop at the museum’s cafe or one nearby to chat about the best things you saw and what museum you want to visit next.

Write Your Winter Love Story

The magic of a Hallmark movie is about more than the grand, sweeping gestures — it’s also in the simple, shared experiences that bring two people closer.

Each of the date ideas offers a chance to connect, laugh and build a bond, whether you’re getting lost in a quiet bookstore, giving back to your community or enjoying a snowball fight. The most romantic stories are the ones you write together, so start making memories that will keep you warm all season.
