It’s been months since my spouse and I tied the knot. Out of all the details meticulously planned — the food, venue and songs for the after-party — there’s only one thing friends and family still bring up in conversation. Spoiler alert — it’s not the usual rustic signs, interactive photobooths and dessert bars. Here’s everything you need to know about the unusual wedding idea that our guests couldn’t stop talking about.

The Search for Something That Hasn’t Been “All Over Pinterest”

Brainstorming for a unique addition to my wedding feels like finding a needle in a haystack. First, it has to be memorable and relevant to our love story. I don’t want it to feel forced or trendy just because it might go viral. Next, I want it to be within the budget. Most of all, I want it to make both our guests and us feel truly special.

My partner and I love art. We enjoy museum dates and the stillness they bring us. A lot of our inside jokes actually started while we were admiring different works of art. That’s when we thought, “Why not have our wedding day painted?”

What Is a Live Wedding Painter?

A live painter is exactly what it sounds like. This professional is responsible for immortalizing a moment of pure happiness on canvas. Even in the era of smartphones and professional wedding photographers, live painting allows you to witness the start-to-finish process, which is undoubtedly the most beautiful thing about it.

While you assume that this is now a trendy add-on and not a very unusual wedding idea, we took the concept up a notch. We hired a live wedding painter and his team to produce the following outputs:

  • One large canvas focused on the couple
  • A gallery of miniature paintings featuring our guests

Why It Was the Best Part of Our Wedding Reception

It was an instant hit. Having a live wedding painter made our big day even more special. Guests were in awe, many saying it was the most memorable part of our wedding day. While the main artist focused on our special canvas, three watercolor artists mingled with our guests.

One snapped photos of each guest, whether they were flying solo or paired up. Then, the other two got to work, turning those photos into beautiful watercolor keepsakes. The result? Every guest left with a totally unique wedding favor they’ll never forget.

The artists set up a little corner for guests to visit. Curious friends and family members would stop by all night, and the artists happily chatted, shared their process, and even took special requests. My partner and I also noticed that people mostly congregate in that area, watching how the artists finish a cherished work of art.

When we got home, our phones wouldn’t stop buzzing. Friends sent us photos of their little paintings, already displayed on their desks and walls, and some even planned to have them framed. My heart honestly melted. It made me so happy that our keepsake idea was what everyone was talking about, far beyond likes and shares online.

How to Find and Hire the Right Artist

The most challenging part was hiring the best man for the job. Consider these tips when finding the right live wedding painter for your wedding.

Set a Budget

I’ll get real — it can be expensive. Expect to pay between $1,500 and $10,000, depending on the artist’s experience, style and location. If this sounds like a stretch, opt for beginner painters who produce the type of art you want. Costs are steep for sure, but you’re investing in a gallery-worthy piece, which I think is worth every penny.

Know Your Preferred Style

Artists have their own signature art style. Some create whimsical watercolor pictures, others are more realistic, and others lean toward humorous portraits. You want to ensure their aesthetic feels like you.

Use Your Connections and the Internet

Perhaps you have a friend who hired one during their wedding. Maybe you have a family member who loves art and can connect you with their network. If you’ve exhausted your resources, the Internet is your best friend. Use social media and search for relevant hashtags, such as live wedding painting and your location.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions

Seriously, there’s no such thing as a dumb question when talking to a vendor, and a live wedding painter is no different. Aside from the usual concerns, like fees, here are some questions worth floating during your initial consultation.

  • Do you need to sketch the venue beforehand?
  • Do you offer digital copies?
  • Can I see your creative portfolio?
  • How long does it take to finish portraits for X number of guests?

A Modern Bride-to-Be’s Guide to Finding Her Unusual Wedding Idea

If hiring a live wedding painter sounds like a big commitment to you, don’t worry. It’s not the only “unique” idea out there that can make your wedding stand out. Here are some tips for finding the perfect add-on on your wedding day.

Start With Your Story

Before opening Pinterest, sit down with your partner and list out the highlights of your relationship. How did you meet? What’s an inside joke that always makes you laugh? Sometimes, the most unique idea isn’t found on a “Top 10” list, but in the smallest details of your story.

Always Prioritize Experience

A good physical favor is nice, but nothing beats the charm of a unique experience. Ask yourselves, “What can we have our guests do or feel?” For instance, lawn games can ignite their competitive spirits. A make-your-own pizza bar can spark conversations and personal taste tests among your guests.

Make a “Boring” Part Fun

Think about the slowest or most awkward part of a wedding celebration. For me, it’s the transition from the ceremony to the reception. Once you’ve identified it, focus your creative energy there. Instead of standard escort cards, what if you created a puzzle that guests can solve?

Incorporate Your Culture

Many countries have their own fair share of wedding games. For example, in Sweden, if the bride leaves the room, women guests can kiss the groom’s cheek, and vice versa. In the Philippines, guests are encouraged (not mandated) to pin money onto the couple’s clothing to wish them a prosperous future. Think about what’s often celebrated in your culture and see how it fits into your celebration.

Find Your Own Interesting Wedding Idea

Having a live wedding painter was the best choice we made. Whether you decide to hire one or not, you can still create an unforgettable experience for your guests. Be bold in your choices — start with the details that define your love story, then focus on elevating the guest experience. Soon enough, you’ll find that idea that guests won’t stop talking about.
