Bored with the same old monotonous grocery list? TikTok creators have got you covered.
Although we need food to survive, that doesn’t mean our meals must be boring. Spicing up dishes and getting creative with preparation introduces the kitchen as a place of joy and excitement. Explore the wonderful and wacky TikTok food trends circulating on the video-sharing app this year.
1. Pancake Cereal
How about the best of both worlds for breakfast: pancakes and cereal. You may think this is some new brand, but pancake cereal came into popularity for its simplicity to make at home. It is basically miniature pancakes in a bowl!
Using a ziplock bag or piping bag, TikTok creators pipe tiny pancakes on a griddle and scoop them into a bowl. You can enjoy this breakfast slathered in syrup and butter, or floating in milk.
Try experimenting with different flavors like blueberry or chocolate chip to take this “cereal” to the next level.
2. Whipped Drinks
This style of drink was all the rage in 2020 quarantine kitchens. Whipped coffee is a traditional drink in India and Pakistan (named phenti hui) and South Korea (known as Dalgona coffee). Though TikTok recipes stick with a simple 3-ingredient version, these cultural drinks often serve the foam with shaken egg whites and condensed milk.
To make your own, add equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water to a bowl. Whip continuously until butterscotch-colored foam forms. Scoop the foam onto milk and ice.
Get creative and make summertime whipped lemonade or whipped hot chocolate for a cold winter’s night.
3. The Tortilla Flip
TikTok promises that you’ll never have to waste time making a lunch. With a tortilla flat on a plate, slice 4 slits halfway to the center to create 4 quadrants. Each quarter will have its own toppings. To form your wrap, fold each end into triangles and enjoy!
Some popular ingredients are:
- Chicken, pesto and tomato
- Peanut butter, banana and honey
- Pizza sauce, mozzarella and pepperonis
4. Famous Feta Pasta
This pasta recipe took the world by storm for its elegance and an incredible burst of flavor. Even better, you only need a handful of ingredients. Simply boil your pasta on the stovetop while baking the sauce in the oven.
To make the sauce, place a block of feta cheese and grape tomatoes in a baking dish and sprinkle with olive oil and seasonings. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.
Drain the pasta and combine it with the sauce for a delicious dinner.
5. Cloud Bread
Baking bread also became incredibly popular in the last few years, but cloud bread is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. A jiggly mass of fluff, this bread is made with egg whites, sugar and cornstarch. Essentially, it is a baked meringue! Take a taste of a marshmallow cloud with this unique baking experience.
6. Brownie Mug Cake
Mug cakes have been around for a while, but a brownie mug cake takes decadence to the next level. Everyone wants easy treats, and the microwave does all the heavy lifting here.
Simply mix the dry ingredients (including chocolate chips) and add oil, vanilla and milk. Pop it in the microwave for 90 seconds, and you’ve got a fudgy treat for any night of the week.
Experiment with garnishes to increase the elegance of your dessert. Everything from raspberries to powdered sugar adds a little extra sweetness to this treat.
7. Hot Chocolate Bombs
Hot chocolate bombs are spheres of chocolate filled with hot chocolate mixes and marshmallows. Once you submerge them in hot water or milk, the chocolate melts to allow the mix to combine with the liquid. This is also a project you can personalize with peppermint, caramel or cinnamon.
You can always buy hot chocolate bombs as holiday gifts, but TikTokers love making their own sweet treats. Learn how to temper chocolate before attempting your own project. This will make sure you have structural soundness before you dip them in hot milk.
