Djibouti is located on the northeast coast of the Horn of Africa. It is located at the Bab el Mandeb Strait, in between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is home to the deepwater port that hosts the French Naval base. There is so much to do in the city, from snorkeling to exploring the diverse plant and marine life. Here are 10 of the best Djibouti city tourist attractions.

1. Grand Bara

Grand Bara is one of the country’s largest and oldest dry lakes. It now consists of sand flats and desert grasses. It is the best place to enjoy hours of sand yachting. The sport involves using a wheeled vehicle across the land.

You can also participate in walking tours around Lake Abbe or hike around the Ghoubet region. Here you are surrounded by mountains, cliffs, and volcanoes. If you enjoy diving, then check out the cove in Lake Ghoubet.

2. Lake Abbe

This saltwater lake offers stunning views with tall limestone chimneys. Fun fact, the landscape was used in the movie Planet of the Apes. The lake is also home to the earliest known human fossil species.

While many visitors come for a short day trip, consider staying overnight. You are more likely to see the famous pink flamingos. Also, the view is beautiful at night, looking like a sci-fi movie set. The chimneys create silhouettes across the sky, and the business of the day fades away.

3. Gulf of Tadjoura

Do you enjoy snorkeling or underwater photography? If so, this is one of the best Djibouti City tourist attractions to check out. It is a beautiful spot located on the east side, near the Indian Ocean and the entrance of the Red Sea.

The green Goda Mountains surround it. There is plenty to do, from fishing to exploring the coral reefs — even swimming with whale sharks. Roughly 40% of tourists to the country flock here for this attraction.

4. Siesta Beach

If you want to spend the day sunbathing or hiking, then Siesta Beach or the Plage de la Siesta is the place to be. You can enjoy beautiful coastal views in a clean, family-friendly atmosphere. Parts of it are also clothing-optional for the naturists in your travel gang.

In addition, if you get hungry, there are restaurants nearby, such as Beach House. Plus, this is a cost-effective activity where you can relax and soak up the sun — check out the free volleyball and beach tennis facilities.

5. Grande Pecherie

Grande Pecherie is one of the best Djibouti City tourist attractions. It’s a street and flea market giving you a variety of shopping options for finding that perfect souvenir.

Also, there is a waterfront fish market open in the mornings. You can pick up some fresh seafood for dinner, giving you a chance to try some local cuisine. The many vendors will prepare your meal before your eyes as your mouth waters in anticipation.

6. Dolphin Services

Do you love the water? This attraction allows you to swim with the dolphins. There are other activities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and boat tours as well.

During these excursions, you can see whale sharks up close. Also, many tours provide the equipment and include lunch. So, when going on a family trip, there is something for everyone to enjoy. You have numerous experiences from which to choose, from a full or half-day excursion to a 3-day cruise with all the amenities. Those who opt for the latter visit various sites around the Gulf of Aden, including Ghoubet Bay, Sable Blanc and Ras Korali.

7. Lake Assal

Lake Assal is Africa’s lowest point at 155 meters below sea level. It is a salt lake surrounded by inactive volcanoes and lava sediments. The buoyancy of the water makes it the perfect place to float around in, as it’s even saltier than the Dead Sea, preventing you from sinking beneath the gentle waves.

Also, the lake changes color depending on the time of day. It can vary from white or turquoise based on the light, so consider a romantic sunset stroll

8. Day Forest National Park

If you enjoy hiking, then this is one of the best Djibouti City Tourist Attractions for you. The park is part of the Goda mountains with rare species of flowers to explore. You will see a variety of vegetation, from junipers to olive trees. You may also encounter a variety of animals, from birds to green monkeys.

The park is the perfect photo opportunity as shades of blues and greens surround you. Plus, all hiking is good exercise. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of physical exercise a week. With all the activity, you will be more tired at the end of the day. This is incredibly convenient if you’re traveling with small children.

9. Khor Ambado Beach

The beach is ideal for snorkeling and sightseeing. You can even pack a lunch and set up a lovely picnic near the water. It is located near the capital, with beautiful sunsets and volcanic landscapes.

The descent down to the beach is steep, but the water is calm and warm. There is a restaurant on the beach and umbrellas set up. Consider visiting in late autumn or early spring when the temperatures aren’t too hot. Summer temperatures can exceed up to 104℉.

10. Moucha Islands

Moucha Islands offer stunning coral reef views ideal for diving and fishing. You can access the spot from the Djibouti port. There are also overnight camping and day tours available. While on the island, you can explore diverse marine life like hammer sharks and manta rays. It is the ideal place to relax and escape the business of the city.

Here are some more popular activities:

  • Walking
  • Photography
  • Sightseeing
  • Sunset watching
