“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe,” is a Victorian rhyme that’s been echoed for what feels like forever. And genuinely, fewer things can be harder than coming up with ‘something blue’ wedding ideas.

After all, the very hue tends to contrast with other traditional colors and elements of your wedding attire. However, there are ways you can elegantly sneak it into your outfit for that extra pinch of luck.

What Is the Idea Behind ‘Something Blue’?

Although ‘something blue’ feels like a random phrase to keep up the rhyme, there’s actually a real reason why it’s been used. A general interpretation is that blue can symbolize purity and fidelity in your marriage. Your chosen blue object is also meant to be a good-luck charm that can ward off the Evil Eye, a curse that could make the bride infertile.

Who Gives the Bride ‘Something Blue’?

Traditionally, a married woman or a mother gives the bride something blue. Think of it as a blessing of sorts. That said, modern weddings mean traditions change. You can assign someone else to give you something blue, or potentially even arrange all the elements in the rhyme yourself. You get the final say.

Best ‘Something Blue’ Wedding Ideas

You can either take advantage of how eye-catching blue can be or try to be discreet with how you wear or carry a blue item on your wedding day. Here are several suggestions.

1. Necklace

A blue necklace can be the best way to incorporate the color blue. Just remember to consider the style and size of your chosen pendant, as they should match the neckline of your dress. If you’re wearing a top with a high neckline near the base of the neck, you may want to opt for shorter necklaces instead.

2. Earrings

Blue earrings can also be a wonderful option that’s slightly more subtle than a necklace. You also want to be intentional with the style and size, this time matching your hairdo. An updo hairstyle usually means your ears are exposed all day, which is a great opportunity for dangle earrings if that’s your desire.

3. Ring

While your wedding ring is the star of the show, you can still get a ring with a blue stone on your other hand. Some people have engagement or heirloom jewelry that fits the bill perfectly. If you want to be more discreet, wear it as a necklace with a chain.

4. Bracelet

A dainty blue bracelet can help tie your wedding look together while checking off wearing ‘something blue’ on your special day. There are tons of designs, so you can certainly find one that matches the rest of your aesthetic.

5. Watch

If you love or collect watches, you can certainly find some wedding watches to choose from. You can choose a blue dial or a blue watch band. Some of the most popular variants will usually feature a soft baby blue that could be easily mistaken for white in certain lighting.

6. Blue Hair Ribbons

Want to add a little whimsy to your hairstyle? A clip-on blue hair ribbon or numerous mini ribbons can make your hair look absolutely beautiful. Just make sure it’s put on securely so it lasts the whole day.

7. Crystal Hair Comb

An alternative that works for any wedding up-do is a blue crystal hair comb. Lapis lazuli or sapphires can offer that extra shine that will really make the accessory pop, even against dark-colored hair.

8. Garter Belt

A garter belt used to be the traditional option for ‘something blue’, and many brides still choose it. You can explore a variety of styles online, including a lacy set that can comfortably stay on your thigh throughout the ceremony.

9. Blue Sash

A blue sash is a statement piece to add to your wedding dress, especially if you’re wearing a completely white dress. Make sure to choose a shade that’s meaningful to you—you can use the color of cerulean to symbolize your love for the sky or ocean blue to commemorate a beach wedding.

10. Blue Flats

If you’re wearing a floor-length dress, your footwear will likely be hidden. Thus, you can certainly get away with wearing some blue bridal shoes. Flats are ideal if there’s plenty of walking and standing, but baby heels can certainly work as well.

11. Reception Dress

It’s not uncommon for people to change into a reception gown, or even wear it under their wedding dress for a flashy reveal in front of guests. A soft blue would be a nice way to experiment with hues and style while still having the traditional white during the ceremony.

12. Handkerchief

Handkerchiefs are a must to bust out when you’re having waterworks happen during your wedding day. You can certainly get a solid blue handkerchief or look for more elegant designs with blue borders or patterns.

13. Nail Polish

Wedding nails are a very important part of your wedding day, especially with the closeups on your ring, bouquet and more. Still, choosing blue nails can be pretty unique. If you want to be more subtle, opt for a pedicure instead.

14.  Blue Post-It Note

Get a blue Post-it note and have a parent, sibling or best friend write a little inscription on it. You can keep the words close to you on your special day by sneaking them into your pocket or under your shoes. Remember to add it to your scrapbook.

15. Blue Flowers

Blue flowers in your wedding bouquet are iconic, whether it’s the full theme or just the centerpiece. However, if you’re part of the 62% of Americans who love or like the idea of tossing the bouquet to single women, maybe remove the branch of blossoms first to keep it on your person throughout the ceremony.

16. Blue Embroidery

Having a little embroidery on the hem of your wedding dress can make it a thousand times more special. Request your favorite symbol, initials or even wedding date to the seamstress so that you have that special memento.

Add That Extra Touch of Blue

Following the rhyme and getting ‘something blue’ for your wedding outfit can add some extra flair or a little extra luck for your marriage in the future. Whether you’re going with a sentimental piece or seeking something luxurious, know that you’ll be an absolutely beautiful bride.
