First dates are about learning. When you meet someone new, you want to begin testing your compatibility. However, not knowing the person already can make the beginning of a new relationship a little awkward. If you get stuck, try some of these 24 get to know you questions to ask on the first date.

Finding out what attracted them to you can help start conversations about both your likes and dislikes. It also gives you an idea of their motivation and what they think of you.

This question is an easy way to find out if your entertainment interests align. It can also start conversations about what someone likes about a genre whether its comedy or horror.
4. What show do you miss the most?
Nostalgia is a powerful tool. The television shows we miss obviously stuck with us in a way others did not. Learning this could segue into a deeper conversation.
5. What’s your favorite book?
Like television, the books we enjoy the most can teach us about ourselves. Finding out what their favorite book is and why can give you more information about their personality.
6. What are your greatest passions?
A person’s passions are a large part of them and you’ll be around them if you continue to date.
7. What is your ideal superpower?
This question can help you understand how the other person thinks. It’s a good way to transition into why they want that power which can tell you more about them. It’s also a fun icebreaker.
8. Who is your greatest inspiration?
The people who inspire help make us who we are and there’s always a story behind them. Getting to know that story lets the other person talk about someone they admire. You can also find out the traits that inspire them and know if you have them.

This is another one that can give you hints to who your date is deep down. The person they want to switch lives with could be someone they aspire to be like or whose life experiences they wish to have.

This topic is a fun conversation starter for people who love to travel or want to begin traveling. It serves as a preview for the kinds of places you could enjoy together. Even if things don’t work out, you could get a good recommendation for your next vacation.
11. What do you do for a living?
Knowing someone’s occupation helps you get to know the basics. It also leads into conversations around where they want to end up in their career and where their job might take them.
12. What is your dream job?
Bouncing off of the last question, the job someone works now might not be the job you most desire. Learning their dream job lets you know where they’d like to be one day or what they’re passionate about.

Learn more about their desires with this question. The time you spend together will likely be outside of work and knowing what they prefer to do can help you figure out your compatibility.
14. What are your hobbies?
While work may prevent them from doing what they want to do during the day, your date likely has hobbies they enjoy. Learning whether they like to read, play sports, watch television or do crafts can lead to new conversations.

Everyone has a place where they feel most relaxed, safe or amazed. Learning where that place is and the story behind it can give you insight into what matters most to the person.

This may seem deep for a first date but its a question that encompasses their needs and desires. It can also tell you if they’re looking for a fun time or a long-term relationship.
17. What is a skill you want to learn or get better at?
What we strive to learn can tell someone as much about us as what we already know. Since we often post on dating profiles what we can already do, this question can help you learn more about their personality, what they care about and the things they enjoy.
18. Do you have any pets?
Pets can be an added bonus for some people and a dealbreaker for others. Like kids, pets come with the person so knowing this ahead of time could save you some trouble.
19. What is your favorite animal?
Pet owner or not, everyone has a favorite animal. Whether it’s a goldfish or a narwhal, this topic is a fun way to break the ice and potentially bond over your love for the creature.
20. If you had to see one movie in theaters now, what would it be and why?
This question goes slightly deeper than “What is your favorite movie?” It can lead into entertaining discussions about different actors, genres and storytelling techniques. Who knows? Maybe you can see it together.
21. What is your go-to music genre?
We often rely on music to not just entertain us but also calm and inspire us. Different genres speak to different people and learning about your date’s favorite can give you a closer look into their personality and what makes them tick.

Knowing what makes the other person proud is a strong indicator of whether they’re the type of person you’ll want a long-term relationship with. It can show values, ethics and passions you might not see yet.

There are so many potential answers to this question and you never know what you’ll get. Seeing things with our eyes can help us understand or appreciate an event. This question is an excellent way to dig deeper into likes and dislikes or what is most meaningful to them.
