Summer may be a few months away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock beach waves hair in the meantime. Wavy locks, short or long, are stylish regardless of the season and are one of the simplest hairdos you can work into your morning beauty routine.
If you don’t live near the salty sea with year-round summer weather, don’t fret. You can achieve messy surfer hair in five easy ways without lotion, sunshine and ocean water.
1. Buy Salt Spray Products
Salt spray products will become your new best friend for effortless beach waves hair. These products are affordable and easy to find at the store, giving your hair plenty of texture. For example, Not Your Mother’s Texturizing Sea Salt Spray instructs you to spray generously through damp hair for tousled, air-dried waves.
Sun Bum also makes a sea salt spray with a lightweight formula to prevent frizz and create better strand separation.
If the products leave your hair feeling too dry, you can always use a few drops of argan or coconut oil to make it softer. Natural oil helps lock in moisture and protects your hair from damage.
2. Make Your Own Sea Salt Spray
Some people prefer to make sea salt spray at home if commercial products fail to produce the desired effect — you’ll only need sea salt, oil, warm water and a spray bottle. Others also like to include an essential oil for fragrance.
It’s best to start with one tablespoon of sea salt in a cup of warm water — a bit of olive, coconut or argan oil is a good idea if you tend to have dry or coarse hair.
Spray your mixture through your hair and allow it to air dry. You can also use a hair dryer on low heat to give your beach waves volume.
3. Use a Curling Wand or Curler
Curling your hair from mid-length to the ends of your strands is another easy way to get loose waves. You can also better decide how tight you want the curls and waves to be with this method.
You’ll rarely see beach waves starting at the root — although it’s certainly possible if that’s what you prefer. If you choose to use a curling iron for beach hair waves, ensure the barrel is at least one to 1.5 inches in diameter.
After winding your strands all the way around, shake out your mane for perfect mermaid locks.
4. Try Using a Flat Iron
Curling irons are tricky for some people. Fortunately, you can use a flat iron to achieve your desired results. Like the curling wand, your flat iron should be at least one inch in diameter.
Start mid-length, twist the strand between the straightener and pull down the rest of the hair. You can go in different directions to give yourself the perfect tousled look.
Remember that the hotter the flat iron temperature is, the tighter the waves will be. For looser waves, keep the setting lower.
5. Sleep on Braids
The lived-in, slept-on look tends to be the most appealing with beachy hairstyles. Overnight beach waves hair is as easy as it sounds.
Shower in the evening and allow your hair to dry 80% to 90%. Then, separate your hair into three loosely-braided sections. When you wake up in the morning, unravel your braided hair, shake it out well and go about your day.
You can also simply spray sea salt through damp hair, allow it to dry slightly and go to bed. While you won’t get perfectly refined waves, your hair will resemble locks that have been in the sun and sand for hours.
Look Like a Mermaid With Beachy Waves Hair
Rock your beach waves hair, whether it’s the middle of winter or the heat of summer. You can perfect the mermaid look at any length with some product and practice. Remember that the best beach-styled hair makes messy look great.
