Shelby Ann’s makeup routine took over TikTok because it looks like a filter, but every product comes from the drugstore. I tested the full lineup myself, step by step, to see if the viral routine holds up in real life. Here’s what happened and the tweaks I’d make if you want to try it yourself.

The Shelby Ann Effect

By the time I saw the Shelby Ann makeup routine for the third time in one scrolling session, I knew I had to try it. The TikTok creator built a routine entirely from drugstore makeup found at Target, Ulta and Walgreens and the finished look is smooth and poreless enough that commenters keep asking if she’s using a filter.

Millions of viewers have watched her layer toner, concealer and powder into a soft, glass-like finish and the routine spun off various versions for mature skin, oily skin and quick weekday mornings. I wanted to see if the same steps would translate on my own face, using the same affordable products she reaches for.

Prepping the Skin With Toner, Serum and SPF

A person squeezes a bottle of sunscreen into their hand.

Before any makeup went on, Shelby Ann’s routine started with a hydrating toner pressed into clean skin, followed by a plumping serum. I used a milky, oat-based toner and pressed it in with my palms instead of a cotton pad, which felt gentler and left my skin noticeably softer.

I didn’t realize how much this step really mattered, though. Skin naturally loses hyaluronic acid beginning around 25, resulting in a drier, less plump texture that makes foundation cling to rough patches. Building hydration back in before base products go on gives everything a smoother ground to sit on.

Next came a lightweight SPF, which I almost skipped since I did it on an overcast day. However, sunscreen still belongs in a daytime routine, even if it’s cloudy or you’re staying inside near windows. Products labeled broad-spectrum with an SPF of 15 or higher are the ones the FDA has linked to a real reduction in skin cancer risk, so I stuck with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 instead of guessing.

Building the Base With Foundation and Concealer

Foundation application in the Shelby Ann makeup routine leans on a lightweight, buildable formula blended out with a damp sponge rather than a brush, which keeps the finish from looking cakey. I started in the center of my face and worked outward, adding a second layer only where I needed more coverage around my nose and chin.

Two different concealers came next. I dotted one brightening shade on the inner corners of my under-eye area and a slightly thicker one wherever extra coverage was needed, like around my mouth and near my nostrils. Using two concealers instead of one felt like overkill, but it solved the problem of a single concealer doing one job well, but not the other. Blending them separately kept each doing its own job instead of muddying together.

Setting, Sculpting and Blush

Once the base was blended, I moved on to a loose, brightening setting powder, applied with a puff, directly under the eyes and anywhere I’d use concealer. Pressing rather than swiping kept the powder from disturbing the concealer underneath, which is a small technique detail that made a bigger difference than I expected.

For color, a cream bronzer went on the tops of the cheekbones, the nose and the forehead for warmth, followed by a powder bronzer and a soft pink blush to lock everything in place. The layering order surprised me most. Cream products first, then powder over the top, gave the color a lit-from-within quality instead of the flat, chalky look I get when I apply bronzer and blush in a single pass.

Brows and Lashes Are the Details That Sell the Look

Brows in the Shelby Ann routine get brushed up and held with a clear or lightly tinted gel rather than filled in heavily, giving a laminated look without a trip to the salon. I brushed mine upward and outward, letting the gel do the shaping instead of overloading the brow with pencil.

For lashes, a waterproof mascara applied from root to tip, with a slight wiggle at the base, added length without clumping. I curled my lashes first, which the routine doesn’t explicitly call for, but which made a noticeable difference in how open my eyes looked by the end. Skipping heavy eyeshadow kept the whole face looking soft, letting the skin and the brows carry most of the visual weight.

The Step I Added

The original routine keeps lips simple, usually a gloss or a soft balm, but I wanted a bit more staying power without losing the soft, no-makeup feel of the rest of the look. I reached for a creamy lip tint instead and blurred the edges with my fingertip rather than lining them sharply. The technique borrows from the blurred lips trend, which takes its soft, mousse-like finish from K-beauty formulas and it matched the diffused, glassy quality of the skin from earlier steps far better than a precise lip would have.

Skipping the gloss on top kept the texture matte and softer rather than shiny, which was more important in this instance than it would be in a typical makeup look. It felt like the one place I could make the routine mine.

My Honest Verdict

By the end, my skin looked smoother and more even than it does after my usual five-minute routine, and it held up through several hours without shifting into my fine lines. Part of that likely comes down to the hydration step at the start. Clinical testing on topical hyaluronic acid serums has shown statistically significant increases in skin hydration within weeks of regular use, which tracks with how much better my foundation sat once I’d actually let the toner and serum sink in first.

Shelby Ann’s viral routine isn’t magic and it isn’t really about any single product. It’s about layering hydration, color and powder in a specific order and taking the extra 90 seconds most of us skip. That order is the actual trick, filter or not.

Powder to the People

Shelby Ann’s makeup routine earns its virality honestly. None of the products is exclusive or expensive, and the technique matters more than any single item in the routine. I’m keeping the double concealer, the pressed powder and the blurred lip going forward, even on days I’m rushing. If your skin looks half as smooth as hers by then, you’ve done it right. Grab what’s already in your drugstore aisle, take the extra 90 seconds and let the layering do the rest.
