by Josh AndersonFounder and editor of DIY ActiveIs Traveling The Death of Your Exercise Routine? There’s nothing more frustrating than getting into the groove of exercise only to be undone by traveling for work or sheer enjoyment. You know exactly how it goes. Several days of bumming on the beach or suffering through board meetings leads to you totally losing sight of your goals – and adding on a few pounds! There’s got to be a way we can still get in a little exercise so we don’t kill our routine. You’ll notice I didn’t mention anything about hardcore workouts or blasting through your regular routine. If you are like me, you know you will be too busy enjoying yourself on vacay to exercise for 45 minutes each day. So what are we to do? Check out these tips that will help you stay active while on-the-go and help you maintain the results your hard work has gotten you so far!
- Active Activities
What do you remember most about your vacations? It probably was the actual tangible experiences you had when you were living in the moment. This means getting out there and being active via kayaking, canoeing, hiking, swimming, diving, and even rock climbing! What do all of these activities have in common? They are active! They will help leave a lasting impression while keeping you active and in shape!
- Get to Know the Area
This goes hand-in-hand with the previous point! Make sure you know the area that you are going to. This will help you plan accordingly to help you stay active. If you know your destination has awesome hiking trails then be sure to pack the proper foot wear and gear. It’s all about being prepared to get out there, blast some calories and have a good time!
- Quick Bouts of Exercise
Most people have it in their head that exercising involves driving to a gym to sweat for at least 45 minutes. These are the norms that keep us tied to the gym and are frankly causing many of us to skip exercise altogether. The fact is that you can still burn calories and improve your overall health with quick bursts of exercise! Try getting 15 minutes of vigorous exercise in the morning or during a session break (if you are at a conference). These small bouts of exercise are way better then skipping physical activity altogether!
- Grab Your Family/Coworker
Who wants to exercise if everyone else is going snorkeling on a beautiful reef or going out for happy hour? Make the activities or exercise a group thing to not only motivate you but actually cause you to show up and exercise in the first place! This will help build a connection between your workout partner and help you stay healthy!
- Get Up Early and Get It Done
If you are a morning person (uhh I’m not), get your exercise in before you go out for your daily activities. That way you can more fully enjoy the rest of your day! This is a great way to avoid “missing anything” and a great way to maintain your physique! Like I mentioned earlier, it can only be 15 minutes in order to help you maintain or improve your health.
- Nutrition is Key
This probably should have been listed as #1. We get it, sometimes you simply don’t have the mental fortitude to make yourself exercise while on vacation. If none of the above work, then make sure to watch your nutrition. Everyone has heard the old adage of “80% of weight loss occurs in the kitchen” because it is definitely true! Go out and have a great time and enjoy yourself, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the nutrition bank!
- Have Realistic Goals
Ultimately it all comes down to having a good time, relaxing and enjoying yourself or just getting through the terribly long business conference. You really can’t expect to get a 45 minute workout in everyday or to run 3 miles every morning. When you go in expecting too much it can cause you to feel guilty. This guilt can ruin your entire vacation. Do what you can, when you can and you will maintain your physique.Wrap-UpThere you have it – 7 easy tips that you can implement to help you stay active while traveling.
