Everyone has a face shape that helps define their unique appearance. There are many reasons you might want to know your face shape. It can give you an idea of which makeup looks and hairstyles work well with on you based on conventional beauty standards.
The Different Face Shapes
There are six well-defined face shapes.
- Heart-Shaped Face
A heart-shaped face is defined by a widows peak hairline. Other features include a wider forehead than jawline, and cheekbones that are wider than the forehead.
- Rectangular Face
A rectangular face is a face that is longer than the width of their face, with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw close to the same width apart.
Older people are more likely to have this face shape, as some features lower with age.
- Oval Face
Oval faces have share some of the features of both a round and square face. The forehead tends to be smaller, with a longer dace than wide. The jawline and chin are round.
- Diamond Face
A diamond face is like an oval face but with more angles. The cheekbones typically sit high and are pronounced. The distance between them are also wider than the length of the forehead. The chin is narrow with a point and the hairline tends to be angular.
- Square Face
Square faces have the forehead, cheekbones and jawline at the same width. The jawline and forehead are pronounced with more angles than a round face.
- Triangular Face
Triangular faces have high cheekbones and a narrow jaw. The forehead and cheekbones are wider while the chin is narrower, coming to a point.
Determining Your Face Shape
Your face may not fit every piece of criteria for a specific description. Go with the shape that’s closest to your own.
To determine your face shape, you’ll need a mirror. Look at your face and figure out the widest part, whether you use a measuring tape or your eyes. If the widest point is your forehead, you likely have an oval face. Wide cheekbones could indicate a heart-shaped or round face. If your features have even proportions, you likely have a square face.
You should also look at your jaw shape. If your jaw is short or round, then your face is likely round. If your jaw is narrow and pointy, your face likely has a heart shape. If you have a sharp jaw, you likely have a square face.
If you’re not sure about your other features, look at the width of your face in comparison to its length. The length of your face is considered from the center of your hairline go the tip of your chin. The width of your face is from the center of your right profile to the same spot on your left.
A longer face than wide is a sign of a rectangle face, while a wider face is likely a square of diamond shape.
